December 29, 1775 Karl Ivanovich Rossi-Russian architect of Italian origin, author of many buildings and architectural ensembles in St. Petersburg and its surroundings was born.

Karl Ivanovich Rossi (real name Karlo di Giovanni Rossi, Italian. Carlo di Giovanni Rossi), Russian architect, representative of late classicism, one of the creators of Russian ampire, was born on December 29, 1775 in Naples.

At the age of five, his mother, a famous German ballerina, was brought to Paris, and from there at age 17 to St. Petersburg.

Since youth, he was connected to the world of arts, was educated and trained from architect V.F. Brenn. In 1795 he joined the service of the Admiralty College of Architecture.

Rossi studied in Italy in 1802-1803 In 1806, he was awarded the title of architect of ′′ His Majesty's Cabinet ". In 1808 he was commissioned to the Kremlin expedition to Moscow, where he built a theater on Arbat Square (destroyed by fire in 1812). In 1814, he received the rank of colleges an advisor. Returned to St. Petersburg in 1815 In 1816 he was appointed as a member of the Committee of Buildings and Hydraulic Works.

The ′′ imperial style ′′ is characterized by the constructions of Russia, which combines grandiosity with noble simplicity. Main works: Elagin Palace with greenhouse and pavilions (1816-1818), Mikhailovsky Palace, Senate and Synod building (1829-1833), the facade of the Imperial Public Library, the pavilions under Anichkov Palace, the Main Staff building, the Alexander Theater and located behind the Alexander Public Library The buildings of the theater directorate and the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Theatrical street, then renamed to the street of Zodcha Rossi).

Zodchy also worked in Anichkov Palace, in the Winter Palace he decorated the Military Gallery of 1812

In Pavlovsk, Rossi built a library gallery near the palace. One of the latest architect buildings was the bell tower of the Yuryevsky Monastery near Novgorod.

Karl Rossi died (6) on April 18, 1849 in St. Petersburg.
